Every Thursday, we have a community post, just like this one, where you can drop a rec or five in the comments.

This works great if you only have one rec and don't want to make a whole post for it, or if you don't have a DW account, or if you're shy. ;)

(But don't forget: you can deffo make posts of your own seven days a week. ;D!)

So what cool fanart/fanvids/fics/podfics/fancrafts/other kinds of fanworks have we discovered this week? Drop it in the comments below. Anon comment is enabled.

BTW, AI fanworks are not eligible for reccing at recthething. If you aware that a fanwork is AI-generated, please do not rec it here.

rionaleonhart: goes wrong: unparallelled actor robert grove looks handsomely at the camera. (unappreciated in my own time)
[personal profile] rionaleonhart
In Peter Pan Goes Wrong, Robert comments on Sandra 'flirting with everybody'. Everybody, you say? I do love an opportunity to ship a character with everyone, but how do I learn how to write everyone?

When I get fannishly into a work of fiction, I want to gather whatever information I can find that might be useful for characterisation. Usually, this is a simple matter; I just have to watch the show or read the book or play the game!

The Goes Wrong Show universe is more of a challenge. The actual actors are playing fictitious 'actors' who are playing characters, and it's the 'actors' I want to learn more about. If you want to learn more about the fictitious members of the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society, you really have to go digging!

There are snippets of characterisation scattered across a bunch of theatrical performances and supplemental materials, some of which are readily available and some of which really aren't. The Goes Wrong Show itself is easy to come by; it's on BBC iPlayer (although I bought it on DVD because we don't have a television licence), and I've heard it's free on YouTube outside the UK.

(If you're curious about this stupid thing I've gone insane about, I suggest trying the Goes Wrong Show episode '90 Degrees', which instantly makes it clear how ludicrously dedicated the (actual) actors are to the craft of fucking everything up. It takes genuine effort to make a play go this badly!)

Beyond that, I find myself desperately piecing these characters together through brief faux 'behind the scenes' videos across various platforms, and one two-hour in-character radio broadcast, The Christmas That Goes Wrong, which aired in 2016 and is now only available on the Internet Archive.

(I'm including this link solely for my own future self's reference; this is very much a 'this is of interest to me and only me' piece of media! Do you want to hear Chris Bean and Robert Grove fuck up and play 'Summer Holiday' instead of 'White Christmas' three times? Of course you don't. I do. This is for me. If for some reason you do decide to listen, the programme starts three minutes into the audio file, but I really wouldn't recommend it unless the Goes Wrong universe already has its claws in you.)

I still haven't seen The Play That Goes Wrong itself, which is where most of these characters actually originated. I am, I'll be honest, eyeing up theatre tickets.

Anyway, here are my favourite stupid facts I've gleaned about the members of this fictional drama society from supplemental materials. Actually, now that I double-check, all of these facts are about Robert, my beloved terrible egotistic weirdo. (Why are all of my blorbos the worst? Why can't I ever fall in love with someone nice?)

Stupid facts about Robert Grove of the Goes Wrong Show. )

My personal favourite bit of supplemental Goes Wrong material I've come across is this stupid two-minute promotional video (Tumblr link) in which Robert is helping Chris try on suits. Extremely weird and homoerotic; single-handedly sent me from 'I'm not really shipping any of these characters' to 'okay, yeah, these two should have absolutely disastrous sex'. Robert may or may not actively be attempting to murder Chris here?

I want to make a new icon, too. (Edit: Did it :D)

The Shirt Bandit Incident(s) | K-9 | Ren/Oboro/Fujimaru/Kagari | 1.3k words | rated T

Summary: Everyone in Division 9 is issued with the same standard black shirt, so it's easy to get confused about which belongs to whom. Easy to pretend to be, anyway.

Read it on Dreamwidth or on AO3.

The revisions for this chapter involved reducing the instances of "annoying", "annoyed", "annoyance" to huh fewer than the original 15 times but probably still too many XD That's what Narumi inspires, I suppose ;)

Warm as life | Kaijuu No. 8 | Kafka/Reno/Narumi, Reno/Iharu, Kafka/Hoshina | 9k words (WIP, 5/7) | rated M

Summary: The new threat posed by No. 9 weighs heavily on everyone. Under these circumstances, emotions run high and what starts as a way of relieving stress can easily bloom into unexpected feelings. Some people find that easier to admit than others.

Read it on Dreamwidth or AO3.

vriddy: Sakura from Wind Breaker pointing at himself (me?)
[personal profile] vriddy
A couple of days ago, I dug out a Wind Breaker fic I've been puttering on since June last year... Honestly, it's just every single character involved in this panel losing their shit over what happened in that moment, because why should I be the only one suffering?! But anyway, slapping an ending on it has been hard, with a lot of false starts. I outlined another one that's meh and started writing it -- at some point, one just needs to finish things!! There are a lot of good lines in the first few chapters at least XD

Then this morning I went back to edit the kn8 fic, as usual. Once I was done, I checked the notes app on my phone because I'm going somewhere today that I haven't been to in a long time, and sometimes I leave myself tips about directions, how long it actually takes, things like that.

I scrolled, and scrolled, and scrolled to try to find a note from around that time (which didn't actually exist btw), and stumbled across a detailed note with... an ending for that fic?! One that includes a super fun concept I'd never have thought of except apparently I did?! *shakes past-me* WHY DID YOU NOT TELL MEEEE?!?!!! Haha. I'll have to remove/adjust some of the stuff I wrote a couple of days ago because the characters are in different locations, but I really really want to use that idea now in some way now XD

Thank you past-me............ I guess?! Hahaha

Good evening, and welcome to another edition of 'Fic of the Week'. I am Chris Bean, the author.

Tonight’s story is a classic tale of huddling for warmth. The cast is a little tighter than most of our works, but I think that will ultimately make for a more focused piece. I have taken every possible measure to ensure that everything will run smoothly.

Please enjoy tonight’s work of fanfiction, 'Two’s Company'.

My first book of the year is a DNF. There's a part of me that wants to see this as a bad omen for whatever arcane reason, but overall if I must put more weight into this than it deserves, then I'm more inclined to see this as a good omen about letting go of the things that don't serve me. I'm terrible at DNFing books. My compromise is usually "read 100 pages and if you still can't get into it by then, DNF is fair game." Unfortunately this book was only 131 pages long and every time I thought "I must be closer now!" I very much wasn't.

When I can tell a book isn't working for me, I go into analysis mode )

I've seen a reading meme float on my reading page:

* Grab the nearest book.
* Turn to page 126
* The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

I don't want to do it for the other book I started, which is actually closest to me, because I'm not that far in yet and it would spoil me! But I suppose my DNFed book is also there, so... Although I don't really like to talk that much about the things I don't like, I feel like the author is probably doing okay in circles far away from mine. The library waitlist for that book is unbelievable.

So, Orbital by Samantha Harvey! Even if we weren't meant to be this time, what do you predict for my 2026?

You are looking now straight into the heart of the Milky Way, whose pull is so strong and compelling that it feels some nights that the orbit will detach from the earth and venture there, into that deep, dense mass of stars.

Hm.... Don't let the abyss seduce you and swallow you up, no matter how pretty it might look at times? Sure! I can keep that up.

Actually I forgot I had Charlie Jane Anders' "Never Say You Can't Survive" hidden under a few notebooks near me, too. I've been doing a slow reread, a couple of paragraphs here and there, highlighting and tagging bits I want to be able to return to easily later. Maybe that'll give me the how?

"Or you might yourself remembering a broken shoelace from a pair of shoes you owned a dozen years ago."

which is within a section titled, "Big emotions come from tiny things"

Joy in the mundane? Sure, I'm extremely up for that, too :D

I'm a bit antsy about not having finished any book yet, but this is fine. I wrote a fair bit, and also read not-books. Over the last couple of years, I stopped tracking my reading publicly, only jotting down notes in my BuJo instead, maybe an occasional rec here and there, and that's worked wonders to help me read more. I'm still considering creating a goodreads account so I can review at least indie and smaller authors, but I haven't fully committed to a decision yet. Especially when the current system is working out so well for me.

The Show Must Go On.

rionaleonhart: final fantasy viii: found a draw point! no one can draw... (you're a terrible artist)
[personal profile] rionaleonhart
I can't believe my fandom of the moment is The Goes Wrong Show. How on Earth do you write fanfiction for The Goes Wrong Show? It's a show that constantly employs visual comedy, a style of comedy famously unsuited to a non-visual medium, and the main characters are a troupe of actors who we only ever see actively putting on a play, meaning they're in-character most of the time and it's hard to discern the actors' voices.

There's something oddly endearing about how dedicated the Cornley Polytechnic Drama Society are, and how relentlessly they press on with the show as everything collapses around them. They always seem to believe that maybe the rest of the play will work out all right. Every line and every prop has been a disaster so far, but surely they can salvage this performance!

One thing I appreciate is that it's not just 'everyone fucks up and forgets their lines', as I originally thought it might be; the actors each have their own distinct set of traits and their own set of challenges. Dennis fucks up and forgets his lines, yes! Trevor, in the background as the stage manager, works very hard but also messes up constantly. But everyone else has different issues.

I'm going to try to pin those issues down, actually, as a characterisation exercise. Sandra plays up to the camera; Max plays up to the audience; Robert, convinced that he's God's gift to the theatre (he's my favourite), constantly feuds with the director and tries to bolster the importance of his roles; Jonathan is actually a solid actor but rarely makes it onto the stage on account of his inability to open doors. Vanessa and Chris would do fine in a less cursed theatre company but respond very badly to things going wrong; she panics and desperately follows the script even when it would be best to deviate, and he gets increasingly livid. Annie is surprisingly solid in this disaster of a theatre company - she's both able to act and able to think on her feet - but she can be a little overdedicated to the role, most notably in 'The Lodge', when she takes playing dead extremely seriously despite the fact that her character was not supposed to be killed.

I'm constantly impressed by these stupid disaster plays. The timing is absolutely extraordinary. I watched Peter Pan Goes Wrong on DVD last night, and I'm reeling from the fact that this show had an actual West End run, given that pretty much the entire set gets wrecked over the course of the play; did they have to destroy it every evening and rebuild it every day? Doing a play that goes wrong must be so much harder than doing a play that goes right!

I was hoping that writing this post might give me some inspiration, but, alas, I still have no idea how one would even start writing The Fic That Goes Wrong. I'm struggling to even think of a concept. They put on a play; it's going too smoothly; it starts to make the cast uncomfortable; they fuck it up on purpose and end up bowing triumphantly in front of the burning set while Chris screams in the background?

Whether I end up writing anything or not, though, I'm having a great time with this ridiculous show! Even if it's a great opportunity for my housemates to mock me, because I find Robert (as played by Henry Lewis) strangely attractive, and he keeps getting cast in such notably unsexy roles as Father Christmas, Adolf Hitler and the family dog.

A fun aspect of getting into The Goes Wrong Show: now, when I trip over or drop something or otherwise mess up, as I frequently do, I can think 'ah, just like my beloved disaster actors,' and somehow it makes everything less frustrating.

2. Of course, [community profile] snowflake_challenge started as well :D Never too late to jump in if you'd like to, it's a chill challenge like that! I knew I wasn't going to do it this year either, but thought "maybe next year"..... however it's January 3rd and I'm already fighting to keep up with my reading page because I met SO MANY OF YOU COOL PEOPLE through the challenge, and you're participating again haha :D It's really a great way to get to know people a little bit before the friending meme that usually happens at the end of it. I can't recommend it enough if you'd like your reading page to be more lively.

3. I'm going to link again to this AO3 PSA from a while back. It's titled "Protect Your Contact Information From Scammers" but it's interesting in that it describes the format that spam comments take nowadays: first a paragraph that seems genuinely related to your story (thanks and fuck you, genAI), then an invitation to reach out to them because they want to make a comic from it, or help you give more impact to your story, or whatever cue to take you off-site.

The post also offers a step-by-step template for reporting registered accounts that do it, and I gotta say it's effective as the account I reported yesterday was removed in less than 24 hours. (Also, those comments are annoying always, but they sting extra on fics that you know from the start won't have much/any audience. Curses on your potatoes, spammers!!)

(Having said that I don't think the spambots have figured out the "Uncategorized Fandoms" section yet as I haven't gotten any of these on K-9 fic -- if you hate spam comments you should totally join us there XD)

I don't know how interesting this will be to people other than me. I'm not the most artistic or creative person, not by a long shot, but I've decided to share my current primary planner anyway. This set up served me really well last year. This year I've made a few minor improvements, and it's possible that some of these ideas will be useful to other people.

The journal I'm using is the Panobook from Studio Neat. I love the wide landscape layout and the dot grid, and I can vouch for the quality of the paper. I use cheap ballpoint pens (I might experiment with fountain pens at some point, but I haven't yet), and also cheap markers. Neither bleed through these pages. The cover is sturdy, and the spiral binding is resilient. It's 50 sheets, 100 total pages long, which is enough for the entire year and then some. I stay on one side of the page, and then when I get to the end, I flip it over and start writing on the reverse side, so the spiral is always on the left side as I use the notebook. You could obviously just use both sides of the page as you go, but I found this works better for me. (If you're a lefty, in theory you could do the opposite and keep the spiral on the right as you go. The pages have no set orientation.)
