So, the continuing stupidity of work.

The other night, as I was cleaning the fryer (yes, I am a glutton for punishment), the girl cleaning the drawer from under the fryer suddenly said (in a sing-songy kind of way), "Oh, Robin..."

I turned around, she had sliced her thumb right under the pad and there was blood. Lots of it. I told her to just keep pressure on it, called for our management type person who took her away. (The inside edge of the drawer is not a rolled edge, it's straight and sharp and other people have been cut on it, just not this badly. Personally, when it starts to fall over, I let it go. Makes a lot of noise but I don't get hurt that way.)

I finished, well, actually, I recleaned the drawer (blood, you know) and very very carefully put it away. Didn't need more injuries in the deli. No sir.

Now, the logical conclusion of this tale would be that they went to the ER, she had stitches and a tetanus shot.

I said, logical conclusion.

The store manager decided (remember, NO first aid training AT ALL) that she should just keep a band aide on it and it should be all right. Because he didn't think it was all that bad. (And, I guess, after I left, she had to change it like five times because it kept bleeding through. Image that.)

Uh huh.

Before I left, I told her to get to the ER and get it checked out. Told her husband that, too.

Guess what. After work, they went to the ER and yes, two stitches and a tetanus shot later, they went home.

So, today she comes back to work with a doctor's note stating that she is not to get her thumb wet. You know, the one that the store manager didn't think was injured all that badly. Because it has stitches in it. And it's really sore.

Our asst manager tells her that just because she has a doctor's note doesn't mean she can get out of any of her responsibilities. In other words, washing dishes and slicers and other such things. AND because she went to the ER, now she has to go for another drug test.

Plus the fact that we were swamped, couldn't keep up with frying chicken (special this week) and forget keeping up with temps and cleaning and throwing out timed out food. And orders of trays and chicken. And cutting meat and cheese.

And the asst manager seemed to feel that we were all slacking.

I finally went to lunch (break, what break) and Mary left (said she had to get out before she said something that would get her fired) and all I could think was that now I have a car payment, I really can't afford to get fired. So, after my two days off, I'm going in and asking to be put somewhere else in the store.

If it's the intention of the asst manager to make us all leave the deli/bakery area, she's doing a damn fine job.
